New Zealand just had some really fun street art! My favorites from Wellington Wicked Campers This company had a great sense of humor and I wish I had captured all the vans we saw. Awesome. Bulls, NZ The little towns in New Zealand generally take up different "themes" that all the business work together on to give each place a little character. The town of Bulls really takes it on from business names to artwork around town. I love puns and Constabull is my favorite. The rest doesn't really count as street art but I didn't have anywhere else good to put it.

We spent our time in Sarajevo and I'm not sure that I would totally qualify these as street art but I liked that they were from the winter Olympics in Bosnia in 1984.
ZagrebThere was a huge wall of graffiti just around the corner from the train station. I found some pieces I really loved here! Some of the art had some good texture which was really unique combining different materials like paper and wood. Tisno Sibenik
John Lennon Wall Another interesting example of how youth have used graffiti to communicate their frustration and anger in a peaceful way. I won't rewrite the history but it's worth a look here. Non-LennonEast Side Gallery The East Side Gallery is understood as a monument of freedom and to the fall of the Berlin wall. It's the longest open air gallery in the world. For more information check out this website: East Side Gallery Berlin. I was around 12 years old when the Berlin wall came down. I remember seeing the news and people crying. I remember that you could order a piece of the wall to have as your own keepsake in your home. But at that time, I had no real understanding of what this meant in history. Now, at 38, visiting the Berlin wall was powerful, particularly after gaining more insight into the culture by visiting museums in the city. I won't get into all of that here but I will share with you the images I took while there. My understanding is that this is some original graffiti that still remains on some of the original wall Though there was some very serious graffiti here there was also just some interesting and fun stuff to look at as well. Here are a few of my favorites. My hand at a little media-assisted graffiti. An interesting exhibition in the DDR museum, which is an interactive museum showing what life was like for those on the other side of the wall.
The graffiti in Belfast made the "troubles" from recent times seem real and present. Some, at least to me, represented hope and peace while others gave a palpable feel that conflict is still just beneath the surface. That said, the people in Belfast were wonderful to us and we really loved our stay there. Other pieces of street art were just playful and silly like any other place.

Street Art
I've
always enjoyed graffiti. The ever changing feel it gives to
an area can add a beautiful quality to otherwise drab buildings and
bridges. It can also give you a quick feel for what kinds of feelings and emotions are going on with youth in a city. |
